Sherman praised his seniors, Ashley Gerken and Andrea Guevara, who finished their careers. Ashley has been a four year starter and has made all-league three years in a row, he said. She has been a great leader and player during this time. She does everything the right way. Andrea has been a committed team member in her two years here. She has gone out of her way to support teammates and has performed well as our starting center.

Ashley Gerken hit a trio of three-pointers to blow the game open for Dos Pueblos. Gerken led a balanced scoring attack with 11 points. Freshman Justine Katz, Lily Mires and Ari Tapia each scored 10 points. Mires continues to impress with her overall contributions as she collected six rebounds, blocked three shots and recorded two assists, said coach Phil Sherman.
Sherman was impressed with the play of freshmen Lia Papador and Sierra Jewell. Another freshman, Gianna Nichols, made her varsity debut and looked very comfortable with just one practice under her belt, he said. Many coaches at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table’s Press Luncheon were eager to highlight the dedication of their student-athletes this season especially those who are playing multiple sports at the same time.
“I see first hand the things these kids have to go through everyday, and it really is a testament to the athletes and the sacrifices that they’re making for their teams,” said Dos Pueblos softball coach Mike Gerken. “I hope all coaches recognize the sacrifices that all of your two-sport athletes are going through right now.”

Lily Mires and Ashley Gerken led a balanced offense, scoring 14 and 12 points, respectively. The Chargers also received offensive output from freshmen Lia Papadour and senior Andrea Guevara who each scored eight points. Papador played significant minutes and was assigned to defend Grace Padilla of Santa Ynez, one of the best players in league, said Sherman. Ari Tapia and Leila Chisholm did a great job of applying pressure to ball handlers.
Dos Pueblos improved to 3-2 overall and 3-1 in Channel League. Noozhawk sports editor Barry Punzal can be reached at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)
