The young man who bludgeoned him to death, Matthew Mason, 19, could hardly have been more different: a young farmer from an affluent, conservative, agricultural background who was ashamed of the growing realisation he might be gay.
For Alex, discovering who he was was an exciting journey of discovery. But at just 15 years old he was naive - and that made him vulnerable, ultimately fatally, to a teenager a few, crucial years his senior.
