July 18, 2021 will mark 25 years since the day the Olympic torch relay went from Roswell through Dunwoody to Sandy Springs, before continuing toward Atlanta.
In the fall of 1995, newspapers across the country announced three ways to become one of 10,000 torch bearers in the 1996 Olympic Torch Relay, which was sponsored by Coca-Cola. In all, 5,500 community heroes would be selected by United Way chapters. An application and essay were required explaining why the nominee was a hero.

Another 2,500 community heroes were selected to participate in the relay as part of the Coca-Cola Share the Spirit program. The Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games and the U.S. Olympic committee selected 2,000 present and former Olympians and other VIPs to complete the list of torch bearers.
DUNWOODY, Ga. â A Dunwoody man was arrested June 11 after he accidentally fired his gun into his neighborâs apartment along Ashford Dunwoody Road. Police responded to the Jefferson at Perimeter Apartments complex and the victim said Keunte Phillip Wilson, 23, fired a gunshot that went through his bedroom wall. No one was inside the apartment at the time.
Police questioned Wilson and he initially claimed the gun fell to the ground and went off on its own. When the officer pressed him, Wilson changed his story and said he caught the gun before it hit the ground and he accidentally fired the shot.
DUNWOODY, Ga. â Officers were dispatched to an Exxon gas station on Perimeter Center East on April 15 for reports that a panhandler was berating people.
Police found Arjuna Hunter Bey, 24, standing outside the front entrance. He ran toward the Perimeter Mall across the street when officers arrived. He was eventually apprehended on Ashford Dunwoody Road.
A manager told officers Bey kept entering and exiting the convenience shop, yelling at customers. The East Cleveland, Ohio, man said he was panhandling for food and money.Â
Police charged him with disorderly conduct, begging and soliciting and pedestrian crossing at other than a crosswalk.
DUNWOODY, Ga. â During a specially called meeting April 12, the Dunwoody City Council approved the purchase of two parcels of land on Vermack Road that will be converted into a park.
Meeting prior to its regular session, the council approved the purchase of 9.2 acres at 4809 and 4819 Vermack Road for $5.6 million. The land sits across the street from Vermack Swim and Tennis Club.
âWhen I heard these parcels were available, I saw the opportunity to preserve this greenspace,â Dunwoody Mayor Lynn Deutsch said. âI look forward to working with the community to create something fabulous.â
Costs for the land purchase will be arranged through the Bricks and Mortar Financing Program offered through the Georgia Municipal Association. The program offers long-term financing with low costs. The lease-to-purchase financing structure was the same used five years ago to acquire the building that became City Hall on Ashford Dunwoody Road.
