A Mexican businessman accused of corruption over the alleged sale of a disused fertilizer plant to Pemex was released from prison Monday after agreeing to repay the state oil company $216.6 million, judicial sources said.
Alonso Ancira, the former head of steel giant Altos Hornos de Mexico, is accused of selling the plant to Pemex for $200 million in 2012.
He left Mexico City jail without making any statements to the press.
Hours earlier, a judge had suspended the proceedings against him after he signed a reparation agreement, to be made in three payments by 2023, a source from the Federal Judiciary Council told reporters.

MEXICO CITY, Feb 3 (Reuters) - Mexican authorities are bringing the chairman of a leading steelmaker home from Spain to face corruption charges, Mexican Interior Minister Olga Sanchez said on Wednesday.
Alonso Ancira, chairman of the board at Altos Hornos de Mexico (AHMSA), was detained in Spain in 2019 amid a probe by the Mexican government into corruption allegations within state oil company Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex).
A Spanish court late last year rejected Ancira’s claim that he was the victim of political persecution, and ordered his extradition.
Sanchez told a regular news conference that Ancira was heading to Mexico in custody of the Attorney General’s Office (FGR).

MEXICO CITY, Jan 28 (Reuters) - Mexico s Petroleos Mexicanos
(Pemex) said on Thursday it has wound up and absorbed its
fertilizer unit, which was linked to a high-level corruption
investigation into a former boss of the state oil company.
Pemex board members earlier this month voted to dissolve
Pemex Fertilizantes and carry over the unit s operations to its
industrial arm, Pemex TRI, Pemex said in a statement.
The move, effective this month, would not affect Pemex
Fertilizantes payment obligations, it added.
Pemex Fertilizantes was used to purchase a derelict
fertilizer plant from steelmaker Altos Hornos de Mexico under
Mexico s last president, Enrique Pena Nieto.
