Fox and Logan were reportedly ambushed by Barnes inside Michelle and George Ligon s home as they carried out a welfare check.
Sheriff Len Hagaman told
WRAL that people who knew Barnes had called law enforcement last weekend to warn them that he was dangerous and had
‘a lot of guns.’
Hagaman said Barnes appeared to have a plan for
‘taking people out’.
‘They were just kind of giving us the heads-up – this is what he’s thinking about doing – and for us to be careful,’ Hagaman told the outlet.
Deputies were un-able to locate Barnes until he showed up to the house on Wednesday – and officials suspect he may have planned to target members of the public but was kept in the home by the officers who died.
A gunman who killed himself, two deputies and his mother and stepfather in a 13-hour standoff in Boone had a large cache of weapons and may have been contemplating a public attack, Sheriff Len Hagaman of Watauga County said Thursday.
George Wyatt Ligon, 58, and his wife, Michelle Ligon, 61, were killed Wednesday, and the shooting suspect, Isaac Alton Barnes, 32, died at the scene, the Watauga County Sheriffâs Office said Thursday.
Barnes was Michelle Ligonâs son and the Georgeâs stepson.
Hagaman said that family members worried about the large number of weapons in Barnesâ possession.
âThere was familial concern that he might try to do something and he had evidently a fairly large cache of weapons and he was at the house, which we didnât think he would be,â Hagaman said.
