John Burns can look back on a lifetime of achievement as he steps down as principal of Barefield National School
THREE small classrooms, a prefab and outdoor toilets, classes of 45 children in a room meant for 20, stepping over school bags to correct children’s work.
The early days of John Burns’ professional life at Barefield National School, where he started in 1980, are a far cry from the modern, richly-resourced facility he retires from this Friday.
Now into his last week as principal, John recalled the days when white chalk and blackboard were his only teaching aids and the excitement he felt when the school first got coloured chalk.
Baker appointed Belmont senior hurling manager

BELMONT have pulled off a major coup by appointing Clare folk hero Ollie Baker as their new senior hurling manager.
A brilliant midfielder during their glory spell in the 1990s, Baker managed Offaly senior hurlers a few years ago and Belmont are thrilled to secure his services for the year.
He replaces Kilcormac/Killoughey club man Trevor Fletcher – Belmont have been knocking on the door in the Offaly Senior Hurling Championship in recent years. They have developed into a hugely competitive outfit and have suffered a couple of agonising semi-final defeats – they were beaten by Kilcormac/Killoughey in this year s semi-final, though that was a quite poor display by them and K/K were more comprehensive winners than their four point margin showed.
Hurling team of the year: Jamesie O Connor picks his All-Star side for 2020 All-Ireland champions Limerick lead the way with eight inclusions on the side. Beaten finalists Waterford have four, while there are also representatives from Galway, Kilkenny and Clare.

Following the conclusion of the 2020 All-Ireland Hurling Championship, Jamesie O Connor selects his team of the year.
1. Stephen O Keeffe (Waterford)
The final performance swung it in O Keeffe s favour, for me. That s probably very harsh on Nickie Quaid. With the way Limerick play, he doesn t get a whole lot to do, akin to a succession of Kilkenny goalkeepers over the years.
