Province and feds announce AgriStability interim benefit increase

Saskatchewan farmers and ranchers are facing immeasurable challenges this year. But an increase to the 2021 AgriStability interim benefit might make things a little easier across the province. The federal and provincial governments have agreed to increase benefits from 50 to 75 per cent. “My heart goes out to those farmers and ranchers feeling the impacts of the drought. We are working closely with provinces to get farm families the support they need as soon as possible. By unlocking more AgriStability funds through interim payments, we can get more cash in hand for farmers who are making tough decisions in a difficult situation and I urge other provinces to request the same if needed,” Federal Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Marie-Claude Bibeau said in a media release. “We will continue to support farm families to get them through the challenges we face today, and position them for a sustainable future, since we know climate change will continue to pose challenges.”

Canadian canola exports could increase on bio-diesel demand

Innes said the main criticism of palm oil is how it is produced in areas that are sensitive for carbon emissions. “For example, cutting down forests and planting palm plantations. That’s the same thing that drove the Belgian political ministers to exclude soybean from any biofuel programs in Belgium,” Innes said. “The Europeans are putting a focus on how crops reduce greenhouse gas emissions, as well as how those crops are produced sustainably in a way that’s not taking forest, or other sensitive land, out of production.” Innes said the measures are largely driven by European consumers who want the crops used for biofuels produced sustainably.

Saskatchewan s food processing facility will be expanding

“The additional capacity in extrusion technology will support commercialization of Saskatchewan-grown crops in many innovative food products, specifically the plant-based protein market,” Prefontaine said. “Our new incubation suites will continue to support the growth of agri-businesses by providing options for entrepreneurs and start-up companies in the agri-food sector.” Saskatchewan Agriculture minister David Marit said demand for the centre continues to grow. He said it particularly helpful to smaller food processing companies. “Dan Prefontaine and his team are just doing an amazing job in helping young entrepreneurs develop new foods, new products, and get them into the commercial market, and work with them,” Marit said. “I met some young entrepreneurs that are developing product there and it is incredible what they are doing and what the food center is helping them to do.”
