Elgin man gets 5½ years for DUI crash that killed passenger Joshua A. Hernandez

An Elgin man was sentenced to 5½ years in prison Thursday for aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol, involving a May 13, 2017, crash that killed his passenger.
Kane County Associate Judge Alice Tracy told Joshua Hernandez, 24, that she was not impressed with what he said Wednesday, when his sentencing hearing began.
She said Hernandez spoke about his brain injury, his rehabilitation and how his family thought he might end up a vegetable. What I did not hear from you yesterday was one iota of an apology or remorse to the family or friends of Stephanie Gordon (the woman killed) or Kristin Gray, Tracy said.
Champaign County? How interesting!
A while back my interest was piqued when I read in the
UDC about a presentation made to the Soroptimist Club concerning interesting women in Champaign County. When I recently read that “Interesting Women of Champaign County, Ohio Prior to 1960” would be presented on the Champaign County Library Facebook page, I made sure to watch.
Library employee Gloria Malone compiled the informative 30-minute program of facts gleaned from county histories, city directories, and archived newspapers. From these sources she added photographs and clippings in describing each of forty notable ladies.

Aurora man charged with murder in Friday shooting Ivan Valles

A 20-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of a man Friday in Aurora.
Bail was set at $1 million Tuesday for Ivan Valles, of the 500 block of Seventh Avenue in Aurora, according to a news release from the Aurora Police Department.
He is charged with killing Fernando Carapia, 32.
According to a news release from the Kane County State s Attorney s office, Valles drove a car to the 300 block of South Spencer Street around 4:45 p.m. Someone got out of the car and fired several gunshots, killing Carapia. The shooter got back in to the car.
