Unit Editions: Ken Garland, Structure and Substance
One of the most pre-eminent British post-war designers, Ken Garland had a long and distinguished career as a commercial designer but was also passionate about ethics, particularly the use and abuse of imagery for advertising purposes. Born in 1929, he was fascinated by graphic and commercial art and collage from a young age. At the age of 16, Garland went to study ‘commercial design’ at the West of England Academy of Art in Bristol, now part of the University of Western England. He graduated in 1947, undertook his military service and eventually found himself at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London. It was a fertile time for British design education. His tutors at Central included Anthony Froshaug and Herbert Spencer and among his fellow students were the Pentagram founders Alan Fletcher and Colin Forbes, together with designers Derek Birdsall and DRU member Alan Ball.

Jury members in the trial of three police officers were taken to visit the Hāwera polcie station on Monday.
Jurors in the trial of three police officers accused of manslaughter visited the Hāwera police station on Monday morning. The officers, who have name suppression, have been accused of failing to provide 55-year-old Allen Ball with the care he needed following his late-night arrest on May 31, 2019, after a family harm incident. Ball died while in a cell at the police station in the early hours of June 1. The jury will have a rest day on Tuesday and the trial will begin again at 10am on Wednesday in the High Court at New Plymouth.

The subject of the manslaughter case is Allen Ball, who died in a cell at Hāwera Police Station on June 1, 2019. In another interview played to the court, a further accused officer said he was aware Ball had expressed suicidal thoughts before he was arrested.
