On Friday, in the High Court at New Plymouth the jury heard from the defendants for the first time as the audio from the interviews conducted days after Ball’s death was played in evidence. The officers, who have name suppression, have been accused of failing to provide Ball with the care he needed following his late-night arrest on May 31, 2019, after a family harm incident.

The subject of the manslaughter case is Allen Ball, who died in a cell at Hāwera Police Station on June 1, 2019. In another interview played to the court, a further accused officer said he was aware Ball had expressed suicidal thoughts before he was arrested.
