Emotions do transcend geographies and cultures. In the widest study of facial expressions, going over 6 million videos from 144 countries, Google researchers have found that 16 facial expressions occur universally in similar contexts across the world. “This is the first worldwide analysis of how facial expressions are used in everyday life,” lead author Dr Alan Cowen, an emotion scientist at the University of California, Berkeley, and visiting faculty researcher at Google, told TOI. “We found that rich nuances in facial behaviour … are used in similar social situations around the world … What these findings imply is that cross-cultural human emotional expressions are a lot richer and more complex than many scientists have assumed.”
