The company has been ridiculed for its pricing structure after customers received bills for tens of thousands of dollars in the wake of February s brutal winter storm and power outage. Griddy charges $10 a month to give people a way to pay wholesale prices for electricity instead of a fixed rate. But when temperatures plummeted well below freezing last month, wholesale prices spiked and Griddy customers were left with sky-high electricity bills. In its filing, Griddy said it owed $29 million to ERCOT for energy costs, $1.2 million to CenterPoint for distribution costs, $1.1 million to Oncor, and another $1 million to Stripe for credit card processing services. It owed at least another $1 million to various other smaller energy companies.
