Armenia’s Prosecutor General’s headquarters
YEREVAN (Azatutyun.am) In a move condemned by press freedom groups, Armenian prosecutors have drafted legislation that would make defamation of government, law enforcement and other state officials a crime punishable by up to two years in prison.
All forms of defamation were decriminalized in Armenia in 2010 during the rule of former President Serzh Sarkisian. The move was recommended by the Council of Europe.
A bill circulated by the Office of the Prosecutor General and posted on a government website on Wednesday says that slander and insults directed at state officials performing their duties have become commonplace and must be criminalized. It says that individuals making slanderous claims through mass media or other public channels must face up to two years’ imprisonment and heavy fines.
YEREVAN, JANUARY 8, ARMENPRESS. The Minister of Justice of Armenia has denied media reports which claimed that his ministry received the draft treaty which is purportedly planned to be signed between Armenia and Azerbaijan during an upcoming summit in Moscow. The media reports alleged that the justice ministry is tasked with conforming the treaty with the constitution.

The Armenian government did not confirm or refute on Friday reports that Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian will fly to Moscow on Monday for further talks on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
Armenian opposition figures and some media outlets critical of the government have said in recent days that Pashinian will hold there a trilateral meeting with Presidents Vladimir Putin of Russia and Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan.
A pro-opposition social media account claimed on Thursday that they will sign an agreement on Armenian territorial concessions to Azerbaijan in an effort to cement the Russian-brokered ceasefire in the Karabakh conflict zone. It said the draft agreement has already been sent to Armenian Ministry of Justice for examination.
