Elaine Thompson-Herah blew away a much-decorated field in the 200 meters Tuesday night. The latest sprint star from Usain Bolt s island country of Jamaica completed her second straight Olympic sprint sweep in 21.53 seconds, the second-fastest time in history.
“It means a lot to me to be in that history, to be in that work-hard book,” said Thompson-Herah, who spent much of 2021 ailing with an Achilles injury and didn t reach top form until she got to Japan.
It marked the second time in four nights that Thompson-Herah has won a sprint and recorded a time that fell short of only the late Florence Griffith Joyner s hallowed, 33-year-old world records. The 200 record is 21.34.
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL - Rio 2016 Olympic champion Thiago Braz this Tuesday (3) won the bronze medal in the pole vault event at the Tokyo Olympics. The 27-year-old athlete s best jump was 5.87 meters.
Initially, Thiago surpassed the 5.55m mark. Then the bar rose to 5.70m and 5.80m, until reaching 5.87m and surpassing 5.82m, the season s best vault for him.
Braz was eliminated in the fight for gold when the bar reached 5.92m, failing to surpass it on his three attempts.

NEW YORK (AP) â For most nights at the Tokyo Olympics, NBC s prime time coverage is drawing about half the audience that the Games had in Rio de Janeiro five years ago.
The numbers are sobering: Sunday s NBC audience of 13 million was down 51% from the 26.7 million who watched the corresponding night in Rio. Saturday night was down 57%, last Wednesday down 53% and Tuesday down 58%, the Nielsen company said.
