How Pizza Hut Turned Sales Around Using KFC Playbook and Team

The emergence of cheap, build-your-own pizza chains like MOD Pizza and Blaze Pizza didn t help, either.  But under the wings of marketing gurus Kevin Hochman and David Graves, Pizza Hut is back in the spotlight – and beating its biggest competitor. Hochman and Graves are part of the team that revived KFC back in 2015.  They are looking to the same playbook with Pizza Hut and leaning on a brand s most powerful weapon: its heritage. By rebooting favorites like Stuffed Crust and Original Pan pizzas and adding new specialty items like Detroit-style pizza, the Plano, Texas-based chain logged its best quarter in a decade. In its latest quarter, US same-store sales grew 16% beating a 13.4% increase in Domino s quarterly metric. Same-stores sales are a key measure of a restaurant company s financial strength.

KFC U S CMO Andrea Zahumensky has left the company | Nation s Restaurant News

The Yum Brands-owned quick-service restaurant is searching for a replacement Andrea Zahumensky, chief marketing officer for Kentucky Fried Chicken since 2017, has left her position at the company, a spokesperson confirmed Friday. The Yum Brands-owned chain has not announced a replacement as a search is currently underway according to the company. Zahumensky is leaving for unnamed opportunities and her last day was April 15. “Andrea has played a critical role in elevating KFC’s brand with industry-leading innovation and marketing activations, which have contributed to profitable same store sales growth and helped build KFC into a more modern and relevant brand,” a KFC spokesperson told Nation’s Restaurant News. “Her contributions have been many, and we are wishing her all the best in her next chapter. A search for a replacement that will maintain this strong trajectory and continue to win with customers is currently underway.”

Pizza Hut s US division is on the rebound with Yum Brands

But, on Thursday, those roles reversed.  The Louisville, Kentucky-based restaurant company, parent of Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, KFC, and Habit Burger Grill, reported an 8% increase in US same-store sales at Pizza Hut for the fourth quarter. It was the chain s best quarter since the fourth quarter of 2010 when US same-store sales jumped 10%, analyst Mark Kalinowski wrote in a post-earnings brief. Taco Bell, on the other hand, reported a 1% increase in the fourth quarter.  In a Thursday morning conference call with investors, Yum Brands CEO David Gibbs and Chris Turner, chief financial officer, credited a number of factors in Pizza Hut s rebound including pandemic-fueled pizza buys, improved digital channels, and the closure of underperforming legacy full-service red roof locations owned by a bankrupt operator.
