John Chaney: I just want to be remembered as someone who cared – The Athletic

63 confirmed on Friday. This story was originally published on Feb. 22, 2019.  When the subject is John Chaney, where do you start? He just turned 87. So he deals with his share of issues, just like most people at that age. But he survives, just like he always has. “The worst thing about getting old,” he says, “is that all the people you knew die. So you have to make new friends.” Yet he still has a presence, even though he coached his last game 13 years ago, especially among the many people whom he’s had an impact on throughout his lifetime. “His story needs to be told, the correct way,” said Aaron McKie, who played for him a quarter-century ago and next season will succeed Fran Dunphy, the man who succeeded Chaney at Temple, to become only the fifth Owls basketball coach since 1952. John Chaney death: Temple coaching legend, pioneer passes away

Jan 29, 2021 Temple legend John Chaney, a pioneer for Black basketball coaches, passed away on Friday at 89 years old. The  Philadelphia Inquirer s Mike Jensen first reported the news of Chaney s passing, which Dana O’Neil of The Athletic confirmed. Temple announced he passed away late Friday morning after a short illness. John Chaney was a great coach, but he was so much more. For generations of students, he was a wise counselor, a dedicated teacher, an icon of success, and a passionate leader who always led by example and with conviction, said Temple President Richard M. Englert, who knew Chaney since he came to Temple in 1982. I am also honored to say he was a dear friend.

The Cougars (13-1, 8-1 American Athletic Conference) also beat the Owls on Dec. 22 and completed the season sweep. Houston won its sixth game in a row by double figures and could run the table in a conference without another ranked team. How about a top spot in March? “I don’t think that’s even been in my mindset,” Sampson said. Grimes and Sasser put the idea in the forefront of any fan watching, as they hit consecutive early 3s to build a 19-point lead en route to win a hastily scheduled game because of COVID-19 issues. This game was originally scheduled for Feb. 8, but when Houston’s game with Cincinnati was postponed, Temple and Houston got bumped up to fill the CBS spot. CBS broadcast a game from the Liacouras Center for just the second time in program history - and the Owls were not ready for the spotlight.
