Speaking outside the Ogden Point Deep-Water Terminal in Victoria on Thursday, federal Transport Minister Omar Alghabra and B.C. Transportation Minister Rob Fleming said this would give cruise ship operators time to prepare for the 2022 cruise ship season.

The federal and provincial governments banned cruise ships from Canadian waters early in 2020 as the COVID-19 threat escalated making cruises among the first industries impacted by the pandemic.
When that ban was extended into the 2021 sailing season, the U.S. government approved a temporary law to allow cruise ships to bypass Canadian ports in particular those that traditionally stop in Vancouver and Victoria on their way to Alaska.
