External threats

External threats July 26, 2021 This refers to the news report ‘India, Israel behind hybrid war on Pakistan’ (July 21). Blaming India or any other country for the Dasu bus attack or other terror activities is of no use. The fault lies within us as we have known the designs of our enemies for the last 70 years. Since the victims of the Dasu tragedy were foreign nationals, it caught the attention of our leaders. Otherwise, such incidents have been happening in the country quite often, and except for statements of condemnation and vows of revenge, nothing has been done to strengthen security. In August 2019, India unilaterally annexed occupied Kashmir and we continue to remain a silent spectator. India appears to be the main obstacle to Pakistan getting out of the grey list of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). How long are we going to be bullied? A government’s condemnation or statements won’t solve the existing problem. If India or any other country can easily carry o

Health experts say excessive intake of meat may cause heart, stomach issues

Health experts say excessive intake of meat may cause heart, stomach issues July 25, 2021 Islamabad : A senior cardiologist on Saturday advised citizens to eat only 100 grams of meat in a day to avoid any stomach problems. People, particularly heart and hepatitis patients, should eat the meat of sacrificial animals carefully, otherwise, it could prove harmful, Heart specialist Dr Azhar Kayani in an interview warned. He said sacrificial animals’ meat should not be preserved for long, saying it could cause infectious diseases, affecting lungs, stomach, heart blood circulation and high fever. The physician explained that the excessive use of salt and chilies could also increase acidity in the stomach which is dangerous for those having problems with regurgitation, ulcers in the stomach and small intestines.

On our own

On our own July 16, 2021 This refers to the letter ‘A costly project’ by Arif Majeed (July 15). The writer is absolutely right. In 1987, I worked with the team which was responsible for the evaluation of the now-stalled track rehabilitation project of Pakistan Railways. A UK-based railway track expert, when he was all set to go back to his home after completing his assignment in Pakistan, asked for six copies of a book on rail tracks which was written by a sub-engineer of Pakistan Railways. He said that he would show the book to track engineers in the UK and tell them that in Pakistan, a sub-engineer had written such a marvellous book on rail tracks. Our railway engineers are competent enough to undertake a project as sophisticated as the ML-1 project. The need of the hour is to free the railways from political interference.

A costly project

A costly project July 15, 2021 This refers to the news report ‘ML-1 from Karachi to Peshawar: Project will be part of JCC meeting’s agenda’ (July 13). The ML-1 project which was launched under the umbrella of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) remains stalled owing to differences over cost estimation between the two countries. One believes that even the current projected cost of $7.2 billion by Pakistan’s finance team is exceptionally high and the project requires revisiting. The problems that have marred Pakistan Railways include deteriorated tracks, outdated signalling system, unmanned crossings and the absence of protective fencing. There is certainly no need to build a state-of-the-art railway system such as one which exists in China, Japan or in Western countries. There is also no need to buy trains which can run up to the speed of 160 km per hour trains with an average speed of up to 120 km per hour are enough to meet our requirement for years to come. Th
