Darter Festival
The Southern Environmental Center will host the eighth annual Darter Festival at Avondale Brewery outdoors Sunday, May 23, from noon to 5 p.m. There will be a Darter Dance performance by Birmingham City preschoolers, live music, beer, food and socially distanced family fun to support educational programs at Turkey Creek Nature Preserve. The festival celebrates a tiny fish that can be found only in the clean, fresh waters of Turkey Creek. Live performers are AJ Beavers from noon to 1 p.m., Dead Fingers from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. and Early James from 3 to 4 p.m. The Avondale Burger Co. food truck will be on-site. Guests will get to try Avondale Brewery’s seasonal Darter Ale and – for the first time ever – you can take home Darter Ale in the limited-release vermilion darter six-pack. Advance general admission tickets are $10, and advance VIP tickets, which include food, drinks and prime seating, are $50. Tickets at the door will be $15 for general

Ready for more live music in Birmingham? The concert schedule continues to grow at venues large and small.
Eric Church is set to perform in March 2022 at the Legacy Arena at the BJCC, the first show announced for the venue after an 18-month renovation is finished. The indoor stage at The Nick is active again, after going dark for several months during the coronavirus pandemic.

Spring is here, and with it comes festival season in Alabama. The coronavirus pandemic caused many events to cancel in 2020, but several of them are ready to return this year. Here’s the status of some popular festivals in the Birmingham area and a few biggies in nearby cities from mid-April through September.
Status: Set for April 17 at Cahaba Brewing Co., 4500 Fifth Ave. South, Building C. Event runs 1 p.m.-4 p.m.
Event features: Gumbo and other New Orleans-inspired dishes from Tasteful Touch Catering food truck, beverages, live jazz by Chuck and the Kings on main stage, live acoustic by Daniel Bowden on porch, vendors.
