CORONADO, Calif. After over a week-long investigation into an incident many called racist, the California Interscholastic Federation has levied several sanctions against one of the schools involved. In a statement, the CIF called the act of throwing tortillas at a predominately Latino team - Orange Glen High School - unacceptable and issued seven sanctions against Coronado High School s basketball team stripping it of the championship title.

I think the Coronado school board and the California Interscholastic Federation have made huge errors and must correct them. Last week, the board voted unanimously to fire the high school boys’ head basketball coach, JD Laaperi, following a recent playoff game. Wednesday, CIF vacated Coronado High’s regional championship, put it on probation for three years and levied other sanctions, too.

In its announcement, the CIF “strongly encouraged” Coronado High to work with Orange Glen to create a positive school relationship. CIF suggested the two schools share in a “restorative justice” exercise and work on community service projects together.
“While consequences are warranted for such an egregious action as throwing tortillas at a predominantly Latino team and the sanctions below are being levied on the athletic program at Coronado High School, we must all be aware that behavior does not normally change with sanctions alone,” the CIF said. “The path towards real change comes with the development of empathy for those who are on the receiving end of this type of degrading and demeaning behavior, no matter the proffered intent of that behavior.”
