was valedictorian of Coronado High School class of 1960.
I’m from Coronado, a Coronado High School graduate, a son of a one-time Coronado school board member, a school board member myself, the father of a current school board president elsewhere, and the father of a Colorado public school principal. My roots go so deep here that even my ship while I was in the Navy had Coronado as a home port.
I think the Coronado school board and the California Interscholastic Federation have made huge errors and must correct them. Last week, the board voted unanimously to fire the high school boys’ head basketball coach, JD Laaperi, following a recent playoff game. Wednesday, CIF vacated Coronado High’s regional championship, put it on probation for three years and levied other sanctions, too.

The man who brought tortillas to the Saturday night Coronado High School basketball game against Escondido’s Orange Glen High issued a public apology Thursday, saying he realizes the act of throwing tortillas has been perceived as racially insensitive.
Luke Serna, who says he is half-Mexican and a registered Democrat, on Wednesday said he gave bags of tortillas to Coronado students. During an altercation following the game, some Coronado players threw tortillas in the air toward the Orange Glen team, which is mostly Latino.
Serna issued a statement Thursday.
“I realize the tortilla throwing has been perceived as racially insensitive,” Serna wrote. “I do not condone racially insensitive behavior, and that was not my intent. I apologize to all who were hurt by this and hope it can be a teaching moment for us all to become more conscious.”

The man who says he supplied the tortillas that Coronado students threw at Orange Glen High basketball players said Wednesday that his intentions were not racist and the district should not have fired its basketball coach.
Luke Serna, who is a Coronado alumnus and is half-Mexican, said he brought packs of tortillas and gave them to Coronado players for a celebration.
Serna has been active in Coronado Democratic circles and says he is an officer with the SEIU 1000 union.
He wrote in an unsigned letter to the school board Tuesday that the tortillas were solely for celebratory purposes, mentioning that it has been a tradition at some UC Santa Barbara sporting events. Serna graduated from UCSB.
