Watt received some much-needed words of encouragement from his namesake this week. The hulking male turtle, who was the 99th turtle to be captured, researched, and released by the Turtle Survival Alliance (TSA), was given the nickname J.J. Watt in honor of the former Houston Texans star who wore the number 99 for a decade before moving to the Arizona Cardinals. The release is part of an ongoing effort with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to restore the threatened species in Houston s bayous and waterways.

The 99th turtle, a 131lb male is nicknamed J.J. Watt, after the defensive end football player with the Houston Texans. The 100th turtle is a 31 lb female, who represents what the TSA calls a milestone in the organization’s conservation initiative. The species is listed by the state as threatened.

The Turtle Survival Alliance that has been researching the species since 2016 and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department are behind the effort to capture, tag and release two alligator-snapping turtles, one male and one female, according to a news release. The male snapping turtle, who was the 99th turtle to be captured eleased was given the nickname “J.J. Watt” in honor of the former Houston Texans defensive end who donned the No. 99 before he moved to Arizona earlier in the year.
