The 5th Judicial District Attorney’s Office is halting the prosecution of cases involving a former Lake County deputy after some troubling statements allegedly made by the man came to light.
In May, District Attorney Heidi McCollum informed Lake County Sheriff Amy Reyes that she would put a hold on several cases involving the deputy, who McCollum said had made several bragging comments about fights he’d had with suspects.
Of note, McCollum emphasized that her office has not found any evidence that the deputy had ever been untruthful in his reports or while testifying in court, or that he had broken any laws. However, McCollum said the attitude some allege he carried at his job raised serious concerns about his motivations as a peace officer.

Lake County sheriff relieved after coroner filed resignation following arrest

Speaking publicly for the first time since charges were levied by the Lake County district attorney earlier this week, Lake County Sheriff Amy Reyes said she was relieved when she learned that Coroner Shannon Kent had tendered his resignation on April 30.

Shannon Kent, Lake County’s elected coroner who is facing felony charges of perjury and tampering with a deceased human body, and the subject of an ongoing criminal investigation, submitted a resignation letter to the county last Friday.
At a Lake County Board of County Commissioners meeting Monday afternoon, Commissioner Kayla Marcella said Kent submitted his resignation effective as of Aug. 1, or when an incumbent is seated in the position.
“At this time, the (board of county commissioners) would like to formally recognize the resignation and invite anyone that feels they can fill that vacancy to submit a letter of interest,” Marcella said.
