Special to The Alliance Review
It didn’t take long for a small but dedicated group of birdwatchers and nature aficionados to have a moment.
Just a few dozen steps onto the Mahoning Valley Trail, the group had already seen or heard song sparrows and cardinals.
It was the first of many ornithological sightings during a 90-minute trek in northern Alliance, an appropriate conclusion to a week of Earth Day activities in and around Stark County.
Armed with binoculars and paper checklists from eBird, the group also had close and not-so-close encounters with cowbirds, woodpeckers and bluejays before the morning ended.

The Bedford County Chamber of Commerce held its Masked Mixer series for the last five weeks.
These mixers featured 10 masked community leaders, who taped their performances that were then shown to an audience via Zoom.
Then those watching could vote for their favorite.
The performer with the least number of votes was unmasked, and then talked about themselves and what they did for the community.
During the entire event, The chamber was able to give away $1,000 in gift cards with four winners every week.
Group A singers were the first to perform on March 25 and Group B singers performed the following week. Both of these rounds had double eliminations.
