LOWELL, Mass. - A product that detects and helps seal leaks in ill-fitting face masks to protect against COVID-19 and other environmental hazards recently won top honors in UMass Lowell s annual student entrepreneurship pitch competition.
Called TrueFIT, the invention was named the Rist Campuswide DifferenceMaker in UMass Lowell s 2021 DifferenceMaker $50,000 Idea Challenge, a contest that caps a year-long program that teaches students in all majors skills they can use to launch their own businesses and nonprofits.
TrueFIT was one of 10 innovations showcased before expert judges during the competition s final round, which was held online and viewed by more than 100 people. Fifty teams entered the challenge, now in its ninth year.

BEAUFORT COUNTY, S.C. (WTOC) - Beaufort County and the town of Bluffton let their mask ordinances expire, but business owners are still able to make the decision on masks in their stores.
“We’re just letting customers decide on what they would like to do,” Haven Boutique owner Tracy Moss said.
“The mask depends on the customer - right now it’s up to the customer. If they feel that they already have a vaccine, and they feel they’re comfortable they don’t have to, you know, COVID, they can go without a mask,” salon owner Amy Nguyen said.

There’s a lot to be thankful for if you are the Medford High School swimming coach.
Longtime coach Mary Judge (30-plus years) was able to navigate her team successfully through this truncated season, despite restrictions, because of the pandemic. The season didn’t start until last month. It usually begins the Monday after Thanksgiving.
Her team was still able to win three of its four meets so far this season. Here’s how the meets have broken down: Malden 93, Medford 77; Medford 82, Lynn English 76; Medford 91, Lynn Classical 78; and Medford 94, Somerville 73.
