Head-on collision on snowy road injures both drivers

AUBURN — Both drivers suffered injuries from a head-on collision on C.R. 36-A northwest of Auburn at 10:20 a.m. Sunday, the Auburn Police Department reported. Tina M. Wells, 57, of Auburn, complained of pain in her ankle, neck and chest and told police she could not move the left side of her body. Beverly G. Ellert, 72, of Auburn, reported neck pain, a police report said. Both drivers had to be freed from the wreckage of their vehicles by the Auburn Fire Department. EMS medics took both women to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne. Wells reportedly told police she was driving eastbound and started to lose control of her 2017 Jeep Cherokee due to wet snow and slush on the road. She said her vehicle crossed into the westbound lane of traffic and struck Ellert’s 2014 Chrysler van.

Chase ends in crash; four sent to hospital

Transported to a hospital for medical treatment were: • the driver, Daniel McKean, 33, of Hamilton, reported to be in serious condition with head trauma; • front passenger Ashley Keegan, 35, of Hamilton, in stable condition with a pelvic injury; • rear passenger Anthony Adame, 27, of Auburn, with complaints of pain and contusion; and • rear passenger Ashland Marek, 27, of Hamilton, with no significant injuries noted by police. A report said an Auburn Police vehicle began pursuing McKean’s car in the city of Auburn. The chase traveled into the 2900 block of C.R. 36 in rural DeKalb County at a high rate of speed. McKean failed to negotiate a sharp, left-hand curve and lost control of his 2002 Lincoln LS. The car went off the northeast side of the roadway, struck a tree on the passenger side, then spun and hit a telephone pole, causing the vehicle to roll over.

Street Talk: A long-ago fire burned into memory

Lewiston, April 23, 1997.  The big apartment house at 56 Maple St. was fully ablaze, and on the streets around it, madness was underway.  Men and women were running every which way, some holding terrified children in both arms. Many were sobbing, others were half dressed, a few just wandered in a daze as though they believed they must be dreaming.  Screams seemed to come from all directions. Screams you could barely hear over the roar of fire. Some wailed with fear and anguish, others were calling out names as they stumbled through the disordered throngs in the street.  “Jody? Oh, my God! Jody, where are you? Has anyone seen Jody?”
