Swindon Stories donates kit for comic-creation challenge

This initiative is from the National Literacy Trust, Swindon Borough Council and WH Smith. The delivery forms part of the charity’s summer offer to support students as they transition from primary to secondary school. REY paper is contributing 150,000 sheets of paper to the initiative. Packs with a selection of activities, paper, colouring pencils, and a free Beano comic are being sent to five schools in Swindon. Accompanying each pack is the National Literacy Trust’s summer writing challenge: Comics Rule!, where children will be asked to design their own comic. The creative writing activity hopes to improve writing attitudes and boost literacy skills.

Eastcott community group hosting event to thank people who helped us during pandemic

EASTCOTT Community Organisation is hosting its first face-to-face-event since lockdown began next month. A Thank-You Day event will be held on Sunday July 4 to look back on the last 18 months and show our gratitude for people who have helped us through the global pandemic. The community organisation is encouraging people in the area to create displays with messages of what they’ve been thankful for. Alongside this, the centre has organised a craft event for families which is bookable through eventbrite to ensure the amount of people attending at a time is safe and follows coronavirus guidelines. Event coordinator Anish Harrison said: This is a great way for us to celebrate services we’ve relied on, our community, and each other.

Free Peppa Pig books to be given out this half term

The Hungry Little Minds campaign aims to help children develop their reading skills Mark your calendars - a Peppa Pig book giveaway is coming to the town centre this half term, on June 1. Swindon Stories is giving away free Peppa Pig books to children aged 5 and under outside Debenhams between 11am and 2.30pm. They will also be giving activity packs of early years resources to help with little children s learning. The giveaway is part of the Hungry Little Minds campaign from the National Literacy Trust. It aims to make sure every child in the country has access to resources that will help build their speech and language skills.

Wonderland of window displays lights up the night in Old Town

Neighbours enjoyed strolling past and admiring the creativity and craftsmanship in each artwork over the weekend. A theme of loving where you live inspired the series of double-glazed delights in an event arranged by the Eastcott Community Organisation for the third year - with a few necessary changes. Events coordinator Anish Harrison said: “We know that the community loves Window Wanderland and we are happy that it spreads some cheer in this difficult time, but as you’d expect due to Covid we’ve needed to do things differently this year. “For example, we couldn’t hold face to face workshops, but shared guidance and how-to videos instead.
