Officials say the girl was in an area of the river known as Cherry Pond when she ventured out too far and went under. According to Gagne, Ali was not wearing a life jacket and reportedly did not know how to swim.

The Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office sad Isha Ali, 13, of Lewiston died at Maine Medical Center in Portland Tuesday night.Sign up for our Newsletters Deputies said they responded to an area of the river known as Cherry Pond Monday evening. Officials said Ali was playing in the water with friends and family when she went underwater and did not resurface. A Maine game warden, a deputy and others in the area searched for Ali, eventually found her and brought her to shore where CPR was performed, according to the sheriff’s office.
