Stanford students Cole McFaul and Caroline Zhang, who are both pursuing master’s degrees as co-term students, have been named 2021 Yenching Scholars and will receive full scholarships for graduate studies at Yenching Academy of Peking University.

They are among the 114 students chosen from 37 countries and regions for the program, which offers a one-year master’s degree in Chinese studies.
Through coursework, independent research and field studies, Yenching Scholars examine China’s past, present and future, with particular emphasis on its development and role in the world. Working closely with academic mentors, they create their own study programs, choosing from six academic concentrations and a variety of extracurricular activities.

A faculty quality-of-life survey conducted by the Faculty Women’s Forum in late 2020 revealed that untenured faculty members are especially concerned about the long-term effects of COVID-19 on tenure progress and about how the pandemic will be addressed in promotion reviews. The survey also reflected the perception among respondents that the university needs to do more to avoid faculty attrition and increasing inequity,

As an undergraduate majoring in biology at the University of the Philippines in the early 1980s, Joel Gonzalez thought he might one day become a doctor.

But a summer class in a style of documentary filmmaking known as âcinema directâ helped set him on a completely different career path, one that would eventually include producing television documentaries focused on poverty and rebellion in the Philippines.
