My work in local industry, the NHS and voluntary sector gives me wide experience of local needs. Bideford must get a fairer share of County funding - for Social Care, under-funded schools and the NHS. We need accessible housing for local people and County Council under-used land can provide this. Mending roads for safer cycling and pedestrian use is a priority. Local building developments should consult the community and give jobs to our young people.

A rider whose glittering showjumping career was cut short by a car crash in which her fiancé died is back in the sport she loves and looking to a bright future.
Having started showjumping aged 12, Sammy Backstrom (née Pharo) had huge success; winning two European gold medals and one silver on ponies. She was selected for the British elite training squad every year between the ages of 16 and 21, represented Britain on young rider teams and jumped in the World Cup aged 18, coming sixth on a horse who “six months before had jumped nothing over a metre”.
The return to the workplace is a focal point for many in the built environment but one of the most important elements is easy to overlook. Guest services will be vital in the return to the workplace. Front-of-house teams will be responsible for welcoming building users back and reassuring them as they negotiate shared spaces in the post-Covid era.
The workplace will inevitably look different after Covid. We have become more aware of our spaces, how clean they are, and what spaces building users share. Employees have also become more conscious of the pros and cons of the workplace. For some, a year of working from home has been a welcome break from the stress and time taken by a commute.
