Scituate wind turbine to stop spinning at night this summer

Responding to years of complaints from neighbors that they canât sleep at night because of the noise from the Scituate Wind turbine, the Scituate Select Board ordered the operation shut down at night â from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. â from mid-May to mid-October.
The seasonal hiatus will cost the town about $96,000, according to data from Scituate Wind, the private company that owns and runs the 400-foot-tall turbine on town property under a contract with the town.

When Brandon Steiner lived with an SU football player as a freshman during the 1977-78 school year, he became infatuated with this roommate’s team-issued gear. He enjoyed wearing it, too, often sharing with his roommate.
His interest sparked a business idea. Steiner realized people were interested in exclusive gear that wasn’t as accessible. He was friends with many players on the football team, so he sold some of their gear to students. Steiner saw there was a bigger opportunity to sell memorabilia, something that wasn’t common at the time. Steiner founded his memorabilia company CollectibleXchange in the 1990s.
SCITUATE The wind turbine on Driftway will shut down for seven hours nightly from May 15 to Oct. 14.
The turbine sits just 650 feet from the nearest home and has been a source of complaints from neighbors since it started operating in March 2012.
The Scituate Select Board voted to pause the turbine during its meeting Tuesday night. The only dissenting vote was Tony Vegnani.
Board member Andrew Goodrich said he met with the turbine owner, Scituate Wind, along with Vegnani, and the company provided estimated costs to the town if the turbine were to be halted during parts of the day.
Shutting down the turbine for seven hours at night for six months will bring a total estimated cost of $96,000, which includes the revenue the town will lose from the turbine, as well as any payments the town had to make to the turbine owner for it not operating.

The issue of what to do with the Scituate Harbor Community Building, also known as the the former Pier 44 building, was addressed at the Jan. 19 Select Board meeting.
The waterfront property located at the harbor has been in limbo for years.
Purchased with MBTA mitigation funds for the Greenbush line, the property is confined by specific restrictions, which limits how it can be used.

“The town needs to be aware that the property was purchased with MBTA mitigation funds for the Greenbush Line. Whatever is done at the site is restricted to public purpose of open space and land preservation for outdoor recreation by and education of the general public,” Town Administrator Jim Boudreau said.
