GoLocalProv | We Are Failing Our Women & They Must be Protected From Violence: Guest MINDSETTER™ Ranglin-Vassell

Rep. Marcia Ranglin-Vassell, a native of Jamaica, decries the violence against women in her home country and is demanding action. I am writing this as a matter of great public health concern. I am troubled and deeply concerned by the upsurge in the number and the egregious way women are murdered and victimized in Jamaica. Violence against women and girls is on the rise and this cannot be tolerated or normalized. Gun violence is a public health issue in Jamaica with totally preventable deaths soaring every day. The number of women that have been murdered within the last months and years have been tragically heart-wrenching. Sadly, violence among women is not new in Jamaica. I recall being a 14-year-old when a local shopkeeper, a woman was violently shot and killed. That was 46 years ago.

OH GOD, YE DEVILS : Varying scourges besetting the church in Jamaica

Pastor James Johnson, 29 . was shot and killed by a lone gunman in September 2018 inside the Church of God of Prophecy building on Old Harbour Road in Spanish Town, St Catherine. The church seems to be under siege in Jamaica. There have been a rash of incidents involving shootings in church, sacrilege, desecration and murders in which members of the clergy appeared to have been deliberately targeted. Jamaica s popular culture is littered with references that flirt with blasphemy, such as when deejay Aidonia spewed on a hit song, ‘Look’: “Inna beach shorts, gwaan leave yah pon a visa/gyal dem call mi lord Jesus. She say Jesus (fly out) as mi reach cross.”
