CBE high school changes, public engagements frustrate families

Article content As virtual engagements continue for the controversial end to several public high school programs, parents are calling the process and the proposals undemocratic, fearing the changes are inevitable. In an effort to balance high school populations, the Calgary Board of Education has announced changes that could see the elimination of arts programming and French IB in grades 10 to 12, and a consolidation of French immersion and Spanish bilingual programs into fewer schools. Special Sneak Peek: Special - The People's Friend

Features Sneak Peek: Special 205 By Barbados Celtic Festival Bill Gibb chats to Carol Anderson about how the annual Barbados Celtic Festival helps bring people and cultures together. It all started for Carol back in 1999 when she was seeking a sunny break. She was drawn back to Barbados time after time, learning of the deep Celtic connections with Scots, Irish and Welsh involved in plantations of the past. The festival was started in low-key fashion in the mid-1990s. A decade ago Carol, who runs her own public relations company, decided she had the skills to help take it to a new level.

Game birds fill the income gap at Powys farm

Gwyn and Ann Evans and their children, Amy and William, are recruiting more rearers Picture: Jonathan M McGee By Debbie James Game bird rearing is providing a good secondary income for farmers looking to maximise the value of farmland. Pheasants and partridge can be produced on a small acreage and, as it is seasonal, rearing can offer a good balance to other farming activities. But to rear game birds successfully and profitably while maintaining the highest possible standards needs careful planning. The Evans family diversified into hatching and rearing pheasants and partridge over 30 years ago. Gwyn and Ann Evans founded Bettws Hall Game Farm in Powys and now run the business with their children, Amy and William.
