THE 19th century saw fraternal societies founded across Great Britain. Among them had been the Newtown Oddfellows whose history is now being explored by the town history group on behalf of the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes (RAOB). The Buffs, as they are known, were founded as far back as 1822 and one of the oldest groups of its sort in the country.

It has been a long time between celebratory drinks for Waipukurau thoroughbred owner-breeders Peter and Ann Evans but they were back in the winners circle at Hastings on New Year s Day.
The couple bred and share in the ownership of Bold Iris, who capped off two good minor placings with a deserved maiden success in a 3-year-old maiden race over 1200m.

What to consider when diversifying into pheasant rearing >More in
Gamebird rearing can provide a good secondary income for farmers looking to maximise the value of farmland.
Pheasant and partridge can be produced on a small acreage and, as it is seasonal, rearing can offer a good balance to other farming activities.
The pandemic has led to contraction in the market since it has restricted the activities of shoots but, as the industry has been on an upward trajectory for two decades, demand is likely to return in the long term.
What land area do you need?
It is possible to rear pheasants and partridges on a small plot.
