New report shows 6.5 million jobs supported by exports
New research released estimates nearly 6.5 million jobs in the UK are supported by exports. Commissioned by the Department for International Trade and carried out by the Fraser of Allander Institute at the University of Strathclyde, it lifts the lid on the value of exporting-led jobs to the UK economy and helps inform the discussion around the untapped exporting potential of businesses across the country.
This ground-breaking research estimates that median wages in jobs directly and indirectly supported by exports were around 7% higher than the national median and that more jobs (3.7 million) are supported by exports to the rest of the world than to the EU (2.8 million). LONDON (AFP) - Britain on Tuesday (Dec 29) announced it had signed an £18.6 billion (S$33 billion) trade deal with Turkey that lays the groundwork for a more comprehensive post-Brexit agreement in the future.
Ahead of the signing, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said it would be our most important agreement since the customs union deal which Turkey struck with the European Union in 1995.
Given Turkey s status in the EU customs union, Britain had to wait until it finally agreed a trade deal with Brussels last week before it could finalise the terms of the agreement with Ankara.
The British government called the deal with Turkey, which largely replicates the current trading relationship, a major win for UK automotive, manufacturing and steel industries .
