A SHOPLIFTER tried to steal items from a Kendal store to give to her children as Christmas presents, a court heard. Denise Elizabeth Brill-Edwards attempted to swipe perfume and gifts sets of an unknown value from Boots in November last year. The 44-year-old was warned by a judge she could go to prison next time. Brill-Edwards, of Little Union Street in Ulverston, appeared at South Cumbria Magistrates Court yesterday. She admitted stealing cosmetics, toiletries and gift sets from Boots and meat from the Co-op in Ulverston on December 22 and November 30 respectively. She also pleaded guilty to stealing alcohol worth up to £258.85 from Booths in Kendal on November 13 and the attempted theft from Boots on the same day.

Thomas Campbell was hauled before the court after he was charged with stalking his ex-partner using messages, calls and attempting to set fire to her place of work. The defendant, of Longlands View in Kendal, was told he was at a crossroads in his life as his jail sentence for the disgusting offence was suspended by magistrates. The 42-year-old was also made subject of a restraining banning him from any contact with his former girlfriend and her new partner for three years.
A MAN spat on his girlfriend after an argument, a court heard. Magistrates were told Michal Nowichi was angry after his partner s friends left a bit of a mess following a party at their home in Windermere. The 30-year-old, of Main Road, admitting a charge of assaulting Laura Caney on August 13 when he appeared at South Cumbria Magistrates’ Court in Barrow. Prosecutor Lee Dacre said Nowichi was intoxicated. “The defendant had come home and there was an argument between them,” Mr Dacre said. “After this the complainant went to make a cup of tea, following which the defendant spat at her, and that spit landed on her face.”
