A public call for suggestions on how to improve breastfeeding supports has triggered an extraordinary reaction among mothers.
First-time mum Deborah Byrne, a money advisor from Smithfield, was prompted to act when she saw Dr Aoibhinn Ní Shúilleabháin speak out about the impact that the loss of a lactation consultant in her area of Dublin South East would have.
Speaking to EVOKE at the time Aoibhinn said: ‘In Ireland, we should have 100 full-time public lactation consultants and we only have three and now one of those is about to be cut. That shows you if it hadn’t been a priority, it’s actually being deprioritised even further now.’

A collaboration between No More Hotels, Thinkhouse and Algorithm, the film features the voices of five cultural commentators and creators, against a backdrop of light projections on the sites of some of the most iconic clubs in Dublin.
“The plan was to vaccinate Dublin Fire Brigade members over a three-week period, with three days in each week set aside. That would be nine days of vaccinations with 120 paramedics each day getting their shots.
“But after the second day we were told there was a shortage of vaccines and they were being diverted to nursing homes. That’s fair enough but, despite seeking clarity from Paul Reid of the HSE on January 20 and 27, we have heard nothing. We are being kept in the dark.”
There are 1,100 fire services personnel but only 240 have received their first vaccination. Up to 80 DFB paramedics are reported to be unable to work due to Covid or being a close contact of an infected person.
