First partners announced in Italy and South Africa in promotions round dominated by disputes lawyers
Milan Shutterstock Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF) has announced a 23-strong list of partner promotions, three short of its partnership round last year that was the firm’s largest ever. Promotions between the firm’s regions were broadly equal. London and Australian promotions decreased to six apiece from 2020’s eight, while Asia saw an increase to five partners. Europe, also with five partners elevated, saw the firm’s first promotion in the Milan office, that of IP and commercial disputes litigator Pietro Pouché. Patrick Leydin, a corporate lawyer in South Africa, marked the Johannesburg office’s first promotion.
HSF names new ESG global leadership team

Global firm Herbert Smith Freehills has a new-look leadership team for its environmental, social and governance (ESG) practice.
The restructured team has been assembled, the firm said, to help meet client demand and build on the firm’s 30 years of experience advising in this area.
The new ESG leadership team, it continued, will streamline client access to the firm’s expertise and specialist capabilities from across all practice areas, sectors, and offices – mobilising multidisciplinary teams to match client need for holistic support in this field.
Included in the leadership team is Australian-based governance expert Timothy Stutt (pictured), who is joined by London-based energy partner Silke Goldberg, responsible investment specialist Rebecca Perlman for the UK, the US and EMEA, and business and human rights specialist Antony Crockett in Asia.

London-based energy partner Silke Goldberg appointed global leader of ESG practice
Silke Goldberg Herbert Smith Freehills is launching a dedicated environmental, social and governance (ESG) practice as demand for sustainability and climate-related advice continues to grow. The new practice area will build on more than three decades of experience advising clients on ESG-related issues across the firm’s existing practice groups. The firm’s global ESG leadership team is being led by London-based energy partner Silke Goldberg, while responsible investment specialist Rebecca Perlman will oversee the UK, the US and EMEA, corporate governance expert Timothy Stutt will head up Australia and business and human rights specialist Antony Crockett will cover Asia.
