Block 25 land sale in downtown Willmar headed to public hearing
The Willmar City Council moved the Block 25 land sale process forward, setting a public hearing for May 17. The Planning and Development department is proposing selling the western half of the block, owned by the city, to Lumber One Development Company for $1 per parcel. Block 25 located between Second and Third Street Southwest and bordered by U.S. Highway 12 and Benson Avenue in downtown Willmar will potentially be purchased by Lumber One Development Company to construct a 57-unit, market-rate apartment complex. The city of Willmar owns the western four parcels, that are currently being used as a public parking lot.
Divided Willmar City Council approves new meeting structure, unanimously moves forward with civility initiative
In a tie vote broken by the mayor, the Willmar City Council approved a resolution to dismantle its committee structure and move to an administrator-to-council method on how issues come in front of the council. The Willmar City Council is changing its meeting structure, doing away with the four-committee process of vetting issues before the full council takes them up and instead turning to a more direct procedure which will reduce the number of monthly meetings council members attend. The hope is the new policy will be more efficient and help with information sharing.
CentraCare to take over Rice Hospital debt from city of Willmar

WILLMAR Health care provider CentraCare, which operates Willmar s Rice Memorial Hospital through the subsidiary Carris Health, will take over $32 million in debt connected to the hospital from the city of Willmar.
The Willmar City Council approved a resolution at the April 5 meeting authorizing the issuance and sale of conduit revenue refunding bonds for the debt refinancing, as well as amending the lease agreement between the city and CentraCare to reflect the changes.

Zemzem Hussen, a senior who plans to study nutrition at Oregon State University, will represent Roosevelt High School on the 2021 Portland Rose Festival Court. The daughter of Ahimed Bati and Badatu Korbino, Hussen was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She was chosen to represent Roosevelt on Portland Public Schools’ Student Equity Council and Black Student Union.
The court announcement came Thursday during a festival Zoom meeting that included fellow candidates Rose Davies, Audrey Nelsen and Alexia Valdez (all seniors), as well as Hussen’s 2020 predecessor on the court, Dyllan Newville.
Willmar City Council unanimously moves the Recreation and Events Center and athletic fields to the bidding stage
At Monday s Willmar City Council meeting, the council approved the plans and specifications for Willmar Recreation and Events Center and the athletic fields, all to be constructed at the Willmar Civic Center.
