Sugar mill owners and exporters illegally sold sugar in Pakistan and made huge profits due to tax exemptions. According to sources, sugar exporters allegedly had claimed waiver of sales and income tax on the entire allocated export quota of sugar on the basis of the forged and fake documents with the connivance of customs officials.

24 May 2021 - 10:26 PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): A Pakistani watchdog is investigating a major scandal involving sugar exports to Afghanistan, a newspaper reported on Monday. Mill owners exported far less sugar than the quotas allotted to them to the landlocked neighbour and sold it within Pakistan. The sugar export scam led to a big loss to the national exchequer, with mill owners and exporters getting illegal tax exemptions. Customs official confirmed to The News International the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province had launched a probe into the scandal. NAB has sought the record from the Collector Customs (Appraisement), Peshawar, by May 27, the daily reported.
