Book of condolence opened as Swindon leaders pay tribute to Prince Philip

The union flag flying from Swindon Borough Council’s civic offices was lowered to half mast as a mark of respect after the news broke before lunchtime yesterday. And the council has made a book of condolences available on its website. It will be archived to show how the Prince’s death was marked in Swindon in future. South Swindon MP Robert Buckland said: “It is with very deep sadness that I learned of the death of the Duke of Edinburgh. 

Tributes paid after death of town s deputy mayor Brian Mattock

Tributes have been paid from across the council chamber to Swindon’s deputy mayor and Brian Mattock, who died at the weekend. Coun Mattock was a long-serving Conservative councillor. A former deputy leader, he had held cabinet posts and chaired committees after first working as a council officer. He was due to step up to succeed Garry Perkins as mayor in May – and was active in council and in committees until very recently despite managing a serious medical condition for some years. Businessman Mike Ashley, owner of the Frasers Group, has a range of retailers under his umbrella and a number of those are operating in Swindon s town centre.  Following the news that video game store Game is moving inside the Sports Direct shop on Regent Street, the Adver has put together a full list of the stores Ashley owns on the Swindon High Street.  Game/Sports Direct After the closure of the standalone retailer, Game will now be moving in with Sports Direct just up the high street.  The Adver approached the video game retailer for a reason about the move but is yet to get a response.
