DEVELOPERS could face extra pressure to make sure the roads they build in Swindon are up to scratch. Conservative councillors Rahul Tarar and Jo Morris are behind a push to have new roads in the town adopted more quickly. When a council adopts a road it becomes responsible for its maintenance, including the footpaths. Until then it is left to the developer – and it can take years to bring the roads to the acceptable standard. Coun Tarar said: “We believe it should not be the taxpayer who picks up the bill for unfinished or substandard work left by the developer and whilst most developers fulfil their obligations, some unfortunately do not and we need to do further negotiations with them which can take time.”
