Fire Chief John Pansecchi said with recruitment numbers dipping into the 20s and less availability among current members, the Alert Hose Company is trying to open its doors to a younger generation. In the past two to three years, we have really been struggling to get new members and getting the current membership to respond to calls, Pansecchi said. Pretty much every department is already doing it so we just had to get with the times, I guess. Pansecchi said numbers haven t been the same since the 1970s but in the past eight or so years, recruitment numbers have sharply declined.
The Adams Fire Department has lowered its membership age from 21 to 19.
The change took effect Tuesday, and the fire department is asking those interested in joining to email JoinAdamsFD@Gmail.com. If you are 18 or older and looking to give back to your community, give us a year as an apprentice in which you learn and demonstrate firefighting and first responder skills, and you will have the opportunity at full membership, the fire department stated in a Facebook post.

ADAMS, N.Y. (WWNY) -On the inside, it looks like an out of control house fire. But it is a controlled environment inside of a steel box. Itâs called a flashover simulator, a common, yet intense training exercise for firefighters.
âThis is one of those things that will kill you in a fire. Thereâs no surviving a flashover, so we want to show them what preempts that, so they can see the signs of when thatâs going to occur and they can prevent it from happening by opening a hose line or by getting out of the space,â said Bruce Heberer, CEO of the New York State Association of Fire Chiefs.

The increase is driven by expenses related to the district s plan to build a new fire station on Main Street (Route 2) The bottom line for the district would go up by just less than $60,000 if approved at the annual fire district meeting on May 25. That represents an increase of 10.6 percent over the current year s spending plan of $565,865. Wednesday marked the second time the committee has reviewed the budget proposal, which it will see one more time on May 5 before finalizing the warrant for the annual meeting. At this meeting, the five-member panel decided to use $25,000 from free cash toward an expected $105,000 FY22 expense for the owner s project manager it hired for the building project. That means residents who attend the annual meeting will be asked to pass an $80,000 warrant article toward that expense.
