A year of changes: Faculty Council in review 14 May, 2021 Colorado State University’s Faculty Council had a full year of jam-packed meetings, covering various discussions, task force reports, elections, regular reports from President Joyce McConnell and Provost Mary Pedersen, as well as key revisions to the Faculty and Administrative Professional Manual. Included in these manual changes were revisions to Sections E and C, made in response to efforts to improve University commitments to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Other changes involved expanded participation of non-tenure track faculty in Faculty Council processes, increased acknowledgement of shared governance, a new Presidential survey, improvements to intellectual property protections, consideration of a new standing committee on information technology, and approval of a full rewrite of the Title IX Appendices.

DePaul trustees appoint Salma Ghanem as provost

The DePaulia Sonal Soni, Assistant News Editor|May 12, 2021 On May 7, DePaul’s Board of Trustees voted to appoint Salma Ghanem as provost, according to a press release. Ghanem was a professor and dean for the College of Communication and took the role as acting provost in 2018 before assuming the interim provost role in 2019.  “Throughout Salma’s time at DePaul, she has demonstrated exceptional leadership and dedication to fulfilling our mission as a Catholic, Vincentian and urban university,” DePaul President A. Gabriel Esteban said in the release. “I am especially grateful for the wisdom and stability she provided during this past year, as we navigated countless challenges caused by the global pandemic. I look forward to our continued partnership.”

Spring brings tempered optimism

Faculty Senate holds April meeting Spring sunshine and more-plentiful Covid-19 vaccines have given socially distanced Blue Hens a bright ray of hope for the kind of fall they remember. Those optimistic feelings are surely welcome, so long as they’re tempered by reality, and accompanied by caution, University of Delaware President Dennis Assanis told professors at April’s regular meeting of the Faculty Senate. “I want to take this opportunity to thank you from my heart for your patience, your cooperation, your resilience for over 12 months now,” Assanis told the senators. “Obviously this pandemic will come to an end. We’re not quite there yet though, and I want to ask everybody to continue to do two things: Not let your guard down, and get a vaccine as soon as it is offered to you.’’

The DePaulia | DePaul s Black affinity groups call on university for change in letter to administration

Dr. Sydney Dillard, a professor in the College of Communication, is suing DePaul for racial and disability discrimination. The letter appears to reference recent lawsuits filed by Drs. Sydney Dillard and Lisa Calvente, both of whom sued DePaul in 2020 for racial discrimination. Former law professors Terry Smith and Sumi Cho also sued the university on grounds of racial discrimination in 2018 and 2019, respectively.  Faculty and staff lament limited opportunities for growth  The statement also addressed concerns from faculty and staff regarding a perceived lack of opportunity for professional growth within the university, with both parties expressing feeling  “cultural taxation — heavy service, mentoring demands, and diversity work that goes uncompensated and undervalued, and frequently made them targets for racial hostility.”
