President Joe Biden, under intense pressure to do more to address the surging pandemic abroad, including a humanitarian crisis in India, intends to make up to 60 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine available to other countries, so long as federal regulators deem the doses safe, officials said Monday.
Last July, during the presidential campaign, Joe Biden promised the universal health care advocate Ady Barkan that he wouldn’t let intellectual property laws stand in the way of worldwide access to coronavirus vaccines.
“The World Health Organisation is leading an unprecedented global effort to promote international cooperation in the search for COVID-19 treatments and vaccines,” Barkan said. “But Donald Trump has refused to join that effort, cutting America off from the rest of the world. If the US discovers a vaccine first, will you commit to sharing that technology with other countries, and will you ensure there are no patents to stand in the way of other countries and companies mass-producing those life-saving vaccines?”
Biden says he will send vaccines to India to help them deal with the world s worst COVID surge - but doesn t say when or if he will deliver unused AstraZeneca shots
President Joe Biden said the U.S. is sending a whole series of help to India to combat the coronavirus, including live-saving therapeutics We are sending the actual mechanical parts that are needed for the machinery they have to build a vaccine, Biden also said
The president added that the administration is engaging in discussions about when the U.S. could send vaccine doses to India
He didn t share additional details about when vaccines could be shipped as India faces a massive outbreak
