A man was killed Wednesday morning in an attempted armed robbery on Buell Road in Gates, police confirmed at a mid-afternoon news conference. The driver, a 71-year-old Irondequoit man who was not identified by police, was the most recent carjacking victim in a recent string of vehicle thefts, said Gates Police Chief Jim VanBrederode. Two men attempted to steal the car at gunpoint, and shot the driver in the upper body. The man was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital, where he died from his injuries, VanBrederode said. His death marked Gates first homicide of the year. VanBrederode described the slain man as an innocent victim and the homicide as unacceptable.
