The Jackson Hole Classical Academy had just three graduating seniors this year, the first students to ever graduate from the private, Christian school.
âIt is only the three of us. In other words, the tripartite soul; the main Kardashians; the Powerpuff Girls (since Pete is the honorary girl); the Trinity; Zeus, Poseidon and Hades; Snap, Crackle and Pop,â said graduating senior Jacqueline Neishabouri, who spoke at the Friday commencement on behalf of her classmates since sheâs been with the Academy for the longest time.
Neishabouri joined in sixth grade, Peter Cook in seventh, and Samantha âSammieâ Fairbanks transferred in after a year and half at Jackson Hole High School.
For nigh on 60 years, if you wanted to learn how to paint or draw you could go to the Art Association of Jackson Hole, one of the valleyâs oldest nonprofits. Gotta dance? Then your place was at Dancersâ Workshop, just a few years the Art Associationâs junior. And those bitten by the theater bug had Off Square Theatre Company, the direct descendant of community performing arts organizations that go back at least 40 years.
But if you had a song in your heart or a tap in your toe, well, here in Jackson Hole your options were limited. While there were skilled musicians willing and able to teach you, as well as various community ensembles, no single entity championed music education like those other nonprofits until the late 2000s, when the Jackson Hole Music Experience tried to do so.
Itâs been a year since junior members of Off Square Theatre Company took to the spotlight. And with that time off, voices arenât used to singing, limbs not used to stretching, and much of the pre-pandemic confidence has evaporated.
Director Kathryn Chapin is just trying to remind her cast, made up of 16 actors grades 5-12, where they were a year ago.
âTheyâve lost a year. So team building, relying on one another, the confidence, itâs all taken a hit,â she said.
âMy number one priority was getting them back in a spot where they are like, âOh, yeah, I can do this. I do love this. I do love working with a group. I can rely on these people. Iâm not alone.ââ
