Governor Murphy, DEP Urge Residents to Act to Improve Air Quality and Combat Climate Change During Air Quality Awareness Week
(21/P014) TRENTON – Governor Phil Murphy has proclaimed May 3 to May 7 Air Quality Awareness Week in New Jersey, urging residents to learn about the importance of healthy air, make simple changes to reduce air pollution, improve their health and partner with the Department of Environmental Protection to combat climate change.
“We are improving air quality for all New Jerseyans while also reducing the greenhouse gas emissions that fuel climate change, moving the State aggressively toward our goal of 100 percent clean energy by 2050,” Governor Murphy said. “Clean air is critical to our public and environmental health, and I encourage every resident to make simple lifestyle changes to help improve air quality in their communities and join our fight against climate change.”
U.S. Government Continues to Support Better Air Quality Northern Thailand
In recognition of the Air Quality Awareness Week (May 3-7), the United States is donating equipment to Chiang Mai Province to help control wildfires that contribute to hazardous air quality in Northern Thailand.
In April and May this year, the U.S. Consulate General in Chiang Mai donated equipment supplied by the U.S. Department of Defense to Chiang Mai Province. The contribution included eight hay balers to help reduce forest residues with a total value of approximately 15,000 USD (470,000 THB). The U.S. Consulate General presented the equipment to Deputy Governor of Chiang Mai Province Rattapol Naradisorn.

Beginning on the weekend of May 22nd, the Allentown Catholic Diocese will allow churches to return to full capacity. The diocese says worshipers will still have to wear masks, as will priests and others giving out Communion. The sign of peace will continue to remained shelved. The obligation to attend Mass is not being lifted yet and Bishop Alfred Schlert says he doesn t know when that might change.
We ve learned more than 50 Allentown Catholic Diocese priests will be getting new assignments later this year. Official word will be announced at Masses in most diocese churches this weekend.
The Pennsylvania Department of Health Thursday announced 2476 new coronavirus cases in the state, leaving the state s overall total at 1,166,692. 57 new COVID-related deaths, pushing the state s total to 26,447. Right now, 2131 people are hospitalized with COVID-19, 467 of whom are in the intensive care unit.
It s National Air Quality Awareness Week and Nevada isn t doing so well
Clark County received an F grade from the American Lung Association for ozone pollution. The rest of the state didn t do much better.

More people and more cars on the road here in Las Vegas is leading to more pollution in our air.
The American Lung Association gave Clark County an âFâ grade. Las Vegas ranks in the top 15 cities most polluted by ozone and in the top 25 by short-term particle pollution.
All of this can greatly affect your health. Manager of Clean Air Advocacy for the American Lung Association Melissa Ramos tells us poor air quality can lead to Worsening asthma attacks, chest tightness, difficulty breathing and coughing. It can increase your susceptibility to respiratory infections. Particle pollution, in particular, has been linked to lung cancer and premature death.

SEATTLE This year, May 3 - 7 is Air Quality Awareness Week, and the Washington State Department of Ecology (DOE) is asking everyone to mark the occasion by considering air pollution and how it affects all of our lives. Everyone deserves to breathe clean air, the department said. Breathing polluted air can cause serious health problems, and even premature death. Because we all breathe the same air, it is everyone s responsibility to understand what causes air pollution and learn what each of us can do to help keep the air clean.
According to the DOE, Washington primarily deals with three types of particle pollution: smoke from fires, blowing dust, and vehicle exhaust.
