Hastings Highlands council reviewed the draft of the municipality’s proposed Exotic Animal Bylaw during a second reading at its meeting on July 21. Before the vote, council took time to discuss the proposed bylaw.
Praising staff for their work on developing the bylaw, Councillor Tammy Davis explained to her fellow council members why she is ready to move forward with the bylaw.
“This is an extremely comprehensive and complete bylaw,” said Davis.
“I believe it’s fair and just. Our public input has given us the same feedback with no new recommendations. I don’t have any suggestions for any further changes, and I am prepared to pass it as is presented. And, if there’s no changes I am not sure why it would go for a third reading.”

With the cancellation of public events due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been nearly two years since the local LGBTQ2S+ community and their allies have gathered for the annual Pride celebration in Maynooth.
As the rate of infection continues to slow, and the number of new cases of COVID-19 per day declines, the event’s organizers announced last week that the popular weekend-long celebration would be returning to Hastings Highlands in 2021.
The celebration gets underway on the evening of Thursday, July 29 at the Maynooth Skating Rink with an event called “Queers Read from Books that Inspire Them.” From 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. local queers will read from books that resonate with them personally; and talk about how they found the book and what it means to them.
