Starting July 28th your smartphone will alert you when severe thunderstorm warnings are deemed destructive. This is not app-based, it is free and already on your phone – you just have to make sure it is turned on. The criteria for a destructive threat is at least 2.75 inch diameter hail and/or 80 mph thunderstorm winds.

국회 보건복지위원회 간사인 국민의힘 강기윤(창원 성산구) 의원은 최근 남미에서 유행하는 코로나19 ‘람다 바이러스’와 관련해 선제적인 방역 조치가 시급하다고 경고했다. 람다변이는 지난해 12월 남미 페루에서 처음 발견된 뒤 올해 4월 이후 급속히 확산됐다. 지난 두 달 간 페루 신규 확진자 중 81%가 이 변이에 감염된 것으로 나타났다.
22일 강 의원에 따르면 아르헨티나와 칠레에서는 신규확진자 3명 중 1명이 람다바이러스 확진자로 밝혀졌다. 아직 국내 확진자는 나오지 않았지만 남미 국가 뿐만 아니라 미국·캐나다·프랑스 등 30개국에서 확인되고 있기 때문에 안심할 수는 없는 상황이라고 강 의원은 지적했다.

The National Weather Service has announced that new Destructive Thunderstorms warnings will now be sent to cell phones.
According to today s news release, the National Weather Service said that when there are severe thunderstorms in your area that are deemed destructive, an Emergency Alert will be activated in the normal ways (television, radio, etc.,), and a new WEA, or Wireless Emergency Alert, will also be sent to cell phones.
The parameters given by the National Weather Service as to what they consider destructive thunderstorms include hail with at least 2.75 inches in diameter and/or winds at or in excess of 80 miles per hour.
Destructive
A destructive damage threat will automatically activate a Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) on smartphones in the warned area.

What do the damage threats mean?
Baseline
This is unchanged from a normal severe thunderstorm warning. Quarter-size hail (1.00 in diameter) and/or 58 mph thunderstorm winds are associated with this level, which will not activate a WEA. When no damage threat tag is present, damage is expected to be at the base level.
Considerable
This criteria is at least golf ball-sized hail (1.75 in diameter) and/or 70 mph thunderstorm winds. This will also not activate a WEA.
Destructive
The criteria for this damage threat is baseball-sized hail (2.75 in diameter) and/or 80 mph thunderstorm winds. This is the only category that will activate the WEA on smartphones in the warned area.
